Relief for the Victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy

As many of you may have heard, the Philippines was recently struck by one of its worst storms in recent memory. On September 26, 2009, rain did not stop pouring in Manila and surrounding provinces of the Philippines. Tropical storm Ondoy brought with it maximum winds of only 85 kilometers per hour but it left behind a record-breaking rainfall of 341 millimeters, killing hundreds of people and causing millions-worth of damage to property and infrastructure. Thousands of families are left with no homes and shelter. With phone lines down and roads inaccessible, countless people were left hungry and cold. Many were stranded on rooftops or far from home, without any means of communicating with family members or rescuers. While authorities have rescued more than 12,000 people, many have admitted that the devastation left behind by tropical storm Ondoy has been overwhelming.

If you'd like to learn more about this disaster and about the different ways you can help in the relief effort, please follow the links below. http://www.ondoyrelief.org/ http://www.quezon.ph/2009/09/26/how-to-help/

Thank you very much!

Filipino-American History Month (FAHM)

It's October!!! It's that time of the year again when we hope to give recognition to the Filipino-Americans that have shared so much of their lives to this nation and to spread awareness about the rich culture and tradition of the Philippines.

We put up a banner in front of Lyons with a list of events that we have installed for everyone to explore. Here are the list of upcoming events and their dates, time and location. So don't miss out!

  • BARRIO FIESTA - Thursday, October 1st, Lower Plaza (right in front of Corcoran Commons Dining Hall) from 6PM. We will be leading a Vigil for our brothers and sisters in the Philippines that have been affected by tropical storm Ondoy. There will also be performances, food, activities, prizes and last but not the least, you get to meet new amazing people.
  • Professor Talusan - Thursday, October 8th, Cushing 001 (CSON building) from 6PM. She is a Tufts University professor, who will be lecturing on the influence of Philippine music to many known Filipino-American artists. She will also do a demonstration of a Philippine musical instrument called Kulintang and will be playing the drums. This is a great way to have a sense of the rich culture of Pacific Asia.
  • Corazon Aquino: The Hero of Our Heart - Guest Speaker: Dr. Bucal (Aquino Foundation), Wednesday, October 14th, Vanderslice Cabaret Room from 6PM.
An event to commemorate the life and legacy of a hero who recently passed in August of 2009, Corazon Aquino, former president of the Philippines. Dr. Mario Bucal from the Aquino Foundation, will be doing a presentation on her accomplishments as the first female president of the Philippines and the leader of the peaceful People Power revolution to overthrow dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. The speech will then be followed by an open mic revolving around values she stood for as the "Mother of Philippine Democracy": social justice, unity, and peace. It is cosponsored by the History Department and the Women's Studies Department.
  • Filipino American Psychology: A Book Reading with Dr. Kevin Nadal – Thursday, October 22nd, Fulton 511 6:30PM
Cosponsored by the Psychology Department and the GLBTQ Leadership Council, Kevin Nadal, Ph.D., a professor, psychologist, performer, activist and author, will be doing a reading from his book entitled "
Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice," which was released in June of this year. Some of these topics he wil be speaking about include: racial/ethnic identity development, colonial mentality, gender and sexual orientation issues, and Filipino American history. As a stand up comedian and spoken word artist he will be performing as well.
  • Halo-Haloween - Thursday, October 29, 2009, Voute 507 7PM Come in your costumes!!! Filipino American History Month closes with an event where PSBC serves and teaches guests how to make a Filipino dessert called "halo-halo" and allows its membership to bond within the intimate setting of a dorm room. Halo-halo, meaning "mix-mix," is the perfect way to describe who we are as Filipino and Filipino Americans and as a club. It is a dessert made of shaved ice, evaporated milk, and an assorted sweet beans and fruit. Filipino and Filipino-American identity and culture has influences from so many different cultures around the world due to its rich history including times of colonization. All of these cultural influences are a part of who we are today, and the diverse membership of PSBC alludes to this idea of "mix-mix" as well.
